Ballymena Lawn Tennis Club - School Youth Programme

BLTC Director of coaching Barry Clarke follows the Lawn Tennis Associations Youth Schools Programme Course.

This has helped to implement a schools tennis programme in primary and secondary schools, while also providing tennis in youth based settings throughout the Mid and East Antrim Borough.

The Primary programme includes detailed inclusive PE lesson plans focused on developing fundamental movement skills, along with a range of the basic techniques and tactics needed to succeed in the sport! All activities incorporate games based learning!

Plus a range of personal development assemblies and challenges, cross curricular STEM resources, as well as intra and inter school competitions.

The Secondary school programme also includes detailed inclusive PE lesson plans, GCSE PE assessment drills, and accompanying videos.

There are modified formats of the game: high energy fitness based Cardio Tennis, and the fun games within sports hall Red Ball tennis, meaning tennis is accessible and engaging for everyone.

In addition, mental health and wellbeing resources, plus intra and inter school competitions for all abilities.

Barry has brought together and adapted the resources and correlated these with the local curriculum targets, which he has a strong knowledge off due to his Post Graduate Degree in Education.

It is the club’s aim to offer an opportunity to all children in the community to learn the wonderful sport of tennis.

BLTC has a longstanding partnership with Ballymena Academy where we offer a comprehensive daily tennis programme within the school for all year groups. Barry takes school games and afterschool tennis for both recreational and performance players throughout each school term. This year the year 8 team reached the Minor Boys Final, with each of the teams entered having their best overall showing in the schools tennis history.

As part of our community outreach "Serving Aces Project" we have went into a variety of local schools throughout Ballymena. The club provides tennis programmes tailored for those both within mainstream education and also those with special educational needs. For the project the school provided tennis to the following schools -

  • Braidside Integrated Primary School
  • Camphill Primary School
  • Carniny Primary School
  • Dunclug Primary School
  • Dunclug College
  • St Comcille's Primary School
  • Castle Tower School

If a school is interested in providing tennis as part of their extra curricular or PE Programme, please get in contact with the club -
